The number of golf GPS devices and the number of applications for smartphones is growing rapidly. It is very difficult to keep track as developers trying to find their place in the market. As a golfer who is looking for one of these devices, you can be overwhelmed by the number choices available to you.
First, if you buy a standalone unit or as a SkyCaddie UPRO Callaway, or should you go to an application much less expensive GPS golf that you can download for your smartphone? Now, obviously there is no way a $ 10 APP for iPhone can match all the characteristics of a SkyCaddie, no more than a Ford Fiesta can match all the features of a BMW. But people do move in compact cars and cheap, they get everywhere they need to go (without the luxury of course).
So if you want a golf GPS device which is cheaper than a round of golf, but you can still travel safely through the course, you might consider a smartphone app instead of a standalone device much more expensive. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of using a Smartphone application.
Pros
The price. There is really no comparison here. If you already have a smartphone, then the cost of a GPS good app may be less than one tenth the cost of a standalone unit.
Free trial. You can download many of these applications for free and test them without obligation to purchase. This is an argument relatively free way of testing the waters for see what applications are different to offer.
Touchscreen. Many phones like the iPhone or the BlackBerry Storm have touch screens. Smartphone Apps golf often display an aerial view of the course and the golfer can find anywhere on the course for feedback Instant. It is a feature that some of the lack of more expensive models. SkyCaddie, GolfLogix, and Sureshot, for example, do not have screens tactile and have no view of the fairway at all.
No subscription or annual fees. With most GPS applications golf you can usually download all the courses you need or you can use the software to map your own courses for free. For some of Subscriptions brands and annual fees alone can cost much more than a Smartphone application.
Cons
Accuracy GPS. There is debate as to whether or not the GPS chip in smartphones is accurate enough for golf. The iPhone claims its GPS is accurate 1-7 meters. But the maximum error of 7 yards is still far from the 1-3 meters SkyCaddie or sub-meter accuracy of Sureshot.
Accuracy and number of mapped courses. You may have to settle for less than route maps available. Typically with phone applications you will not get professionally mapped courses: there are no armies of cartographers (ALA SkyCaddie) Walking over to score all the points keys with extreme precision. More likely you'll have to settle for self-mapped courses or courses mapped by your fellow users software (mostly from Google Earth). What is the accuracy of these cards is debatable.
Battery. Life Golf GPS Apps can be a huge burden for the cell phone batteries. You may find yourself barely able to finish a tour with a full battery charged. Unitary systems, second hand, are equipped with batteries that can last for several rounds of golf.
There may be no decision clear about this: it will probably a personal choice (and economy).
