Is it possible that by far the largest manufacturer of electronic device on the planet to produce a decent digital camera for under $ 250? I'm talking about Sony here and the camera in question is the Sony Cybershot DSCW200 Digital Camera. The DSCW200 is an ultra compact digital, but is priced at the top of this ultra-compact category. Is a worthy competitor, or just a poser?
Let's start with the most important consideration of any camera … image quality. Not so respectable with DSC-W200. Sony chose to go with 12 mega pixels in this ultra compact. Something similar, trying to squeeze an elephant into the passenger seat of his Austin Mini. Damn hard to do, and although his success, where are you going to lead to an elephant? Marketing hype aside, 12MP is quite excessive for an ultra compact camera. Most images of an ultra compact camera will be seen on the LCD screen or uploaded to the pages of MySpace and FaceBook. Nobody is looking to fly to these, the framework, and then hang over the fireplace. 5 or 6 megapixels would have been nice. Probably better, as image noise have been reduced.
For that price, which had great expectations of the DSC-W200 LCD. Unfortunately, it appears that Sony cheaper here. 115,000 pixels in a 2.5-inch LCD is not great. In reality, very grainy, and very difficult to angle seen outside or in sunlight. As a basis of comparison, superior Canon cameras in this category sport 3-inch LCD with 230,000 pixels resolution. At least Sony has provided an optical viewfinder. Not great, but the viewer not less.
While this is lower next trick I agree, simply have to keep up. The USB cable provided by Sony for DSC-W200 is proprietary. I hate being forced to buy a product that is produced by a single company. I like choice. Sony has a bad habit of pushing proprietary technology back to Beta video, Memory Stick, and now with the whole Blu-Ray fiasco. Not to mention those who were not good / Better technologies, but I like to choose.
But wait, that's not all. Sony did enough to slip UPS CyberShot DSC-W200, to make even the target = "_new" rel = "nofollow" href = "http://foolishmumbles.com/DigitalCameraRecommendations/"> hottest division of Sony lover a flirty look to other suitors. Here are some more reasons:
– Does not have enough zoom zoom
– Mega overfishing has driven prices too high
– Flash recharge time is unacceptable
– The big handed users will find the camera controls difficult
– Face Detection only available in auto mode
– Face Detection works inconsistently
– The zoom function does not work when recording Videos
