When I arrived on the GPS market, I decided to compare GPS models to see if I could find the right one for me and for my budget. Honestly, at the time, I did not know much about these nifty little devices. A friend had one, and I really liked. I knew deep what they did, but I knew nothing about the features were popular or even available.
Since Amazon is my online retailer preferred, I started there and read all product descriptions. Of course, I saw that Garmin, Tom Tom and Magellan were leaders of industry, in that order. Unfortunately, my initial joy at finding this information was not long lived. I quickly become confused by all brands and models, all features, and all prices. If you're in the market for a GPS device, and you were to compare models GPS, so I'm sure you experience the same level of frustration I felt. To help you, let me tell you about some of my research. I hope power allows you to more easily compare models of GPS and save you a good dose of frustration.
So, dive!
There are three major manufacturers of GPS devices in the United States, Garmin, Tom Tom and Magellan. Garmin sells about half of the GPS are sold, while Tom Tom and Magellan each have a share of about twenty per cent of the market. All those other companies you hear about the fight over the scraps.
Garmin has two main product lines, the nüvi and StreetPilot. The nüvi is their latest line. Nuvis are smaller and smoother and generally pack more features for our money. You can get the Garmin Nuvi 200 for under $ 200. Their top of the nüvi line sells for just under $ 900.
StreetPilot is an older model. They are a little further than the clunkier Nuvis. But since they are older, the prices on them are probably a little lower (by feature feature) that Nuvis. You do not have the range of functions available on StreetPilot like you do on the Nuvis. Personally, I hesitate not to buy a StreetPilot. I just want to make sure he can do whatever I want.
Of course, you need to compare models Garmin GPS made by its competitors, Tom Tom and Magellan. Tom Tom is the newcomer on the American market, but through aggressive marketing, pricing, but also offer lots of innovative features on their devices, they have gradually taken market share from both Garmin and Magellan.
I love Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition. Although an entry level price, this is not really a unit of input level. Tom Tom are both that Garmin? The buying public seems to think. I do not think the Tom Tom units are just as sleek looking as Garmin but really could not question for you. If you are interested in Tom Tom, be sure to check their GO series.
You can not compare GPS models completely and Magellan set aside. At one time, Magellan was the only manufacturer of GPS. Garmin Then came along and took away a ton of market share. Magellan should not be left for later comparisons of GPS, however. The Maestro line is really great, offers plenty of features, and a dollar for dollar offer as much or more than Garmin or Tom Tom. I especially like their Maestro 4250. For price, around $ 250, I think it's probably the best offer currently on the market.
