Â If you are a user of the back-country or planning a trip back to the county, you should consider purchasing or leasing or a personal locator beacon (PLB). Â PLB GPS tracking units are designed for use inland. Nobody likes to contemplate a situation where they or a companion may need emergency assistance, but the reality is that accidents do occur. In some cases, and federal agencies management of Crown land requires that all users of the backcountry to know how to operate and conduct a PLB approved, while in the hinterland.

Some SAR (SAR) efforts can cost well over a million dollars and could bankrupt local search and relief organizations. Although federal agencies are more willing to accept the cost of the extended SAR operations. The high cost efforts of search and rescue are frequently passed on to survivors of the party. Â Often, these costs are not passed on users when a PLB is used to properly inform the SAR personnel. The cost of doing a search and rescue when the PLB is employed is considerably reduced. Â Many users wilderness think they do not need GPS tracking units or PLB'sÂ as they may still use their cell phone or satellite phone call for help. However, in most cases cell phones rarely work well in the bush. Satellite phones will work well if you have a clear sky above and you know your exact position. Land cover and GPS deteriorate rapidly and satellite signals and if you are seriously injured, you may not be able to move to a location with better reception. Â

The modern use of PLB is a much better choice. Many users of the backcountry now have additional choices as to what they PLB can take with them into the bush. Â Probably the two units PLB most popular on the market today are the ACR and SPOT. CAB has been around since long and uses the World Wide SAR system that was first used in marine operations. Both have unique advantages that make it appeal to buyers. Â

SPOT is the new PLB and GPS tracking unit to hit the market and is very popular with hikers, hunters and snowmobilers. It uses essentially the same frequency as GPS receivers use satellites to transmit GEOS. This has drawbacks because it is easily degrade transmissions. Basically this means that if you're in a canyon or a tree in dense cover you're less likely to obtain your 911 application to SAR agencies.Â Again, this can be real concern if you are injured and unable to move to an area with reception.Â more on the positive side, it allows family and friends to follow your position on the internet.Â You can also ask for help without notifying SAR resources. In other words, you can seek help if your vehicle breaks down on a country road back. Obviously, this is something that most of the SAR and land management agencies do not normally consider a problem with another emergency.Â SPOT is the requirement that subscribe to this service each year. The subscription fee based on $ 100 annually.Â We hope you subscription does not work while you're out in the bush. On the positive side SPOT is much less expensive than the ACR PLB. Â

The ACR PLB is a proven platform using redundant systems to notify SAR resources.Â Unlike SPOT GPS tracking devices CAB uses two different satellite systems and the transmitter operating on 406 MHz. This is essential if you are injured under the cover of trees and heavy snow that this frequency is not degraded. Â The ACR transmits your GPS position if available for the satellite system LEOSAR. Even if you're under 4 feet of snow Tracking and GPS units only use the satellite Doppler CAPS to establish your position. Â

Â If you're out in the open that the issuer will also use the units of information tracking GPS satellite GEOSAR as the SPOT does.Â This redundant system ensures that the SAR resources will be notified of your emergency.Â In addition, the ACR PLB uses the international standard 121.5 MHz frequency for SAR personal identification to meet your exact location.Â On models with the CAB to have up to 4 times more expensive than the SPOT. However, there are no fees annual subscription. Once you buy it and keep your information current, it will continue to be available for emergencies. Another drawback CAB system is that you're limited to using only genuine emergencies similar to what you want to use a system of 911 urban. I would not suggest that you use to get help with a flat tire.

Â You can see that both systems are really similar but PLB different. Both have positive and negative effects to consider. If you're really a country name to return to Canada or Alaska, then we suggest you have the CAB and the best of both systems with you at all times. If you're a casual user hinterland or live in remote areas then a spot would most likely meet your needs. We suggest that before buying any unit that you take time to let each provider from a hinterland. This will be the best way to know how each unit will perform for you. Remember bearer of good PLB May not only save your life, but also a lot of money in the form of SAR costs following an emergency. Back to county users the purchase is not a PLB is penny wise and stingy. Â
