GPS ionospheric delay is one of the most common problems with GPS navigation systems. Inconsistencies of atmospheric conditions affect the speed of GPS signals as they pass through the Earth's atmosphere and ionosphere. Correcting these errors is an important challenge for improving accuracy of GPS position.

These effects are smallest when the satellite is directly overhead and become greater for satellites nearer the horizon, since the signal is affected for longer. Once the approximate location of the recipient is known, a mathematical model can be used to estimate and compensate these errors.

Because ionospheric delay affects the speed of microwave signals differently depending on the frequency – A characteristic known as dispersion – both bands can be used to help reduce this error. Some investigation and expensive military grade receivers Civil compare the delay in different frequencies to measure atmospheric dispersion and a correction more accurate.

This can be done in the civilian GPS receivers without decrypting the P (Y) signal carried on L2 carrier wave according to place code modulated. To do this, the low-cost receivers, a new civilian code signal on L2 called L2C has been added to satellites. This new signal allows a direct comparison of L1 and L2 signals using the coded signal instead of the carrier wave.

The effects of the ionosphere generally change slowly and may stagger. The effects for any particular geographic area can be easily calculated by comparing the GPS-measured position at a known location surveyed. This correction is also valid for other receivers in the same place.

Several systems send this information by radio or other links to allow L1 only receivers to make corrections. The date is transmitted via the satellite system and transmits on the GPS frequency using a pseudo-random if only a special antenna and receiver is necessary.

Humidity also causes a variable delay resulting in errors similar to ionospheric delay, but is present in the troposphere. This effect is more localized and changes more quickly than ionospheric effects and is not dependent on frequency. These characteristics make it much more difficult to make a precise measurement and compensation of humidity errors that the ionospheric effects.

Changes in altitude also change the amount of delay due to a signal that passes through less atmosphere at higher altitudes. Since the GPS receiver calculates its approximate altitude, this error is relatively simple to correct.

GPS signals can also be affected by the issues where multi-path radio signals reflected from the surrounding terrain such as buildings, canyon walls, and the hard ground. These delayed signals can cause inaccuracy as well.

To correct these errors, many techniques have been developed. How these technical work must be corrected multiple delays longer or shorter path delay multi-path.
